Since my arrival in Madagascar, I have had a constant series of challenges trying to find a house. The diocesan bishops house is in need of great repair, and the local priests decided that I should not live there. When I saw it, I understood why. We rented an apartment for me, but as soon as the locals realized that it was being rented by someone from abroad, they tripled the rent.
We found another house to rent, but it is in an area which is not really safe, so the staff secure me in my house each night by locking me in (and hopefully the criminals out!). However, since I have returned to Mahajanga I have not been able to stay at the house. About an hour before I arrived there was a small electrical fire in the outside panel box which has left the house without electricity…and therefore no means of opening the security shutters!
I have just learned that the owners are expecting me to cover the cost of the repair – which makes no sense – and so I have refused. I have learned that lease agreements aren’t worth very much – so I am trying to maneuver through this current frustration.
I’m writing to ask for your prayers - the challenge is that I am staying in a hotel presently, which is getting expensive and is very inconvenient! The greater challenge is that next week I have 12 potential priests gathering from around the diocese – planning to stay at my house. The postulants are gathering for a Vocations Retreat, and at this point we have no where for them to meet.
I am writing this to simply ask for your prayers – that I can (once and for all) find a house which will meet the needs for me and my family, but also with the reality that my house is the main meeting place of the diocese.
I covet your prayers!!
Happy Easter! I will certainly pray fervently 🙏
