I am in the midst of planning my first Synod as the Bishop of Mahajanga. The priests and deacons from around the diocese will gather at the cathedral on Monday, May 26th for a clericus day. I am looking forward to this time with my clergy because it will be the first time we will be together since my consecration in December. They will travel great distances on taxi buses, and in one case several days on a boat, to come together. I ask your prayers for their safety and for traveling mercies.
On Tuesday morning May 27th, Synod will begin with the celebration of Holy Communion. As is the custom in Mahajanga each parish will be represented by their priest and one layperson. Together with these representatives, each of the Diocesan groups will be represented including the development committee, Mothers Union, FLKAM (Men's Association), Riata (Young People's Association), and the Diocesan Treasurer and Chancellor. Altogether there are 28 voting members of Synod.
The Bishop of Toliara, Eveka Samitiana, has kindly accepted my invitation to be the Episcopal visitor at my first Synod. I am grateful for his encouragement and support.
Synod will attend to the business of the diocese. We will receive the financial statements. We will move the budget. We will hear reports from the various diocesan ministries. We will elect new members of the standing committee, and most significantly for me, I will give my first charge to the Synod.
When I asked about the funding for synod I was met with silence….which means that I must raise the funds! If you can help, I’d be really grateful. The total cost of Synod is about $3,000 US. This will cover all the travel costs, housing, and food for all the delegates.
I’d also covet your prayers for me as I write my charge and address some controversial issues. I will speak directly to the issues plaguing the Anglican Communion, the ordination of women, and the issues of financial accountability and transparency…all of which could be contentious. I will also lay out a plan for the growth and development of the diocese, especially in the areas of evangelism and discipleship…so I really need your prayers! Pray for provision and for wisdom!
